Brother, Can you Spare a Minute?

“Soon after the end of hostilities in Europe in 1945, a British Intelligence officer, interrogating high Nazi officials, asked one of them why he thought Germany had lost the war. This was the reply: “During the war, you had a secret weapon for which we could find no countermeasure, and which we did not understand, but it was very powerful.”

Even the Lone Ranger…

March 29, 2010 We’re into our second week of activation for Tina’s (left ear) Cochlear Implant. Things are going great! Tina was born with severe hearing loss. She has used hearing aids since she was 3 years old. Last year she had a cochlear implant in her right ear.  It’s been a fantastic improvement.  A few weeks ago they did the same on her left ear.  About 2 weeks ago, after waiting for the surgery swelling to go down, they activated (turned on) the new implant. A cochlear implant is very different from a hearing aid. Hearing aids amplify sounds […]

Back In The United States

Editors Note: Once again, a few years ago but valid still I took my family to see ‘Behold the Lamb’ yesterday at the Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster, PA. It was a great play by the way. I highly recommend it. A nice gentleman from New England was sitting next to me. We got to talking (not a hard thing for me) and our conversation came around to what I had been doing at the Michael Job Center for Orphan Girls during the last couple of months. I’ve been thinking about that – what I’ve REALLY been doing there […]

The Lazy Clouds of India

Editors note: Written a few years ago. Still very relevant. Do you know about lazy clouds? In parts of India, they are extremely rare.  Here in New Delhi where I’m staying they don’t see them very often.  What are lazy clouds you ask?  J   Fog.   Fog is a cloud too lazy to fly – so it lies on the ground.  It just lies around, luxuriously relaxing – doing nothing much at all. Lazy and not-so-lazy clouds can be beautiful and dangerous at the same time.  Everyone loves the white puffy billows, flying high and riding the winds with joy.  But flying an aircraft into one unprepared is often […]

Graffiti Incident at MJC

Stumbled onto something this morning I thought you would like to see.  We have just installed some lovely standing stone poles for our hibiscus to climb and I noticed some vandalizing activity.  It seems with all we give these girls – graffiti would be the last thing on their minds.  Give a girl a piece of sidewall chalk and you can see from this video you can have severe problems on your hands. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bH_0j0CM8I Where there’s graffiti – you can expect gang activity next, can’t you?  I think that’s what we’re in store for here in the future – gangs […]

Doors Opening

A Love Lessons blog entry from a few years ago: I just came from the Sunday Service here at the Michael Job Center for Orphan Girls. They expect me to preach when I’m here but I’ve been struggling all week to come up with what the Lord would have me say. I had nothing. As I listened to them sing at the start of the service, Uncle John shuffled over and showed me a verse. It was Revelation Chapter 3 Verse 20, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the […]

After Dinner Waifs at the Michael Job Centre

Walking back from dinner one night both of my hands were suddenly taken up by two little girls. One on each side, they were so small, so very thin, so tiny really they couldn’t have been more than a few pounds each. Huge eyes looked up at me with such happiness to be walking with their Uncle Tom. Find waif in your dictionary and you’ll probably see their pictures. They are recent arrivals from the State of Orissa where much of the Christian persecution is taking place, so they spoke only their native language of Oriea. I didn’t know their […]

The Orange Coat Love Lesson

A few years ago I was studying my Bible and came upon a passage that changed my life. It was in Matthew, Chapter 22. Starting at verse 36 it goes something like this: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all our heart and with all your soul and with all your mind,’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Now I had heard this many times before but that day, that particular day, these words struck home […]
